How do I start a business in investment management?

Financial Q&A

I have a passion for investment. I have done well in investing my own money. I would like to turn my passion into a full time job. How do I go to start an investment company to manage other people’s money and earn a fee from it? Thanks.

Take a Series 65 exam. Form an investment management company and get an investment advisory license for it. Start marketing. . .

I would say try to get a job in the field where you would be managing money for clients. Or you can start small and try to manage money for friends or relatives. If you are good, you will slowly but surely attract more capital. Just remember that managing money for other people may be psychologically very different from managing your own money. Also, while it’s good that you have done well, in this field it’s all about your consistent long-term track record. There are lots of people who do well in any given year or 3-year period but much fewer who can do well consistently over 10 years or more. Good luck.
